"Writing pedagogies are extremely influential upon how one acts, thinks, believes, and behaves. That is, learning to write is tantamount to learning to think." ~David E. Kirkland

Let's jump right in...
If we accept that learning to write is tantamount to learning to think, as David E. Kirkland posits in the quote above, we also must accept that the teaching of writing is a profoundly influential act with cultural, social, and political implications; for if writing influences thinking, it must also influence the way one believes, behaves, and acts, according to Kirkland. Given this, the teaching of writing becomes an especially powerful tool for shaping an individual's consciousness. So as we consider the act of writing, it is incumbent upon us to consider also the act of teaching writing.
Against this backdrop, our course will take a critical approach to learning the conventions, styles, and process of writing by creating meaningful learning experiences that help us become better, more critically conscious writers and human beings.
